I wrote a blog a few weeks ago on the Hermit card in Tarot. This card is all about introspection, about listening to your inner voice, about seeing the big picture and intuitively knowing the right way forward.
Normally when I write about a Tarot card, it is because I have had a series of experiences that have given me insight into the card. For instance, the inspiration for the 6 of Swords blog came after a personal hardship. The Justice card blog was the product of a powerful reading. The Moon card blog, a reflection of the times.
But the Hermit card blog was different. This time, it was me who called the energy of the Hermit card to me. Nothing had happened in my life to bring the card's definitions to light. No, this time I was the one looking to the card for help.
When the winds of change start blowing in your life, part of you always knows why. For me, it was a restless voice that was growing inside of me, urging me to break out of the mold I had created for my relationship to the Tarot. I knew change was on my doorstep, but how? in what way?
When I asked the Tarot, the deck gave me two cards: the Lovers and the Fool.
Love, it said. You will fall in love.
And then, Freedom, it said. You will be free to start again.
I fell in love with the Tarot many moons ago, so it was hard for me to imagine doing it all again. But the message was clear. A new relationship with the Tarot will make you free.
Energized now by the possibility of a radical change, I started to strike out in different directions.
At each turn, I consulted the Tarot.
How about I take a new in depth course on Tarot history and divination?
No. Too much money, too much time.
Or maybe I'll just study as much as I possibly can about the Tarot and its origins so that I'm soaking in Tarot theory?
No. You'd just be running away from the truth.
Or maybe I become a true blue alchemist?
God no. Are you mad?
Argh! What to do?
Desperate times call for creative thinking, so I decided to fish through my Tarot cards and find the energy I needed. I found the Hermit card. If this card of deep intuitive connection could not help me, then nothing would.
I imagined myself standing on the mountain top, looking out over my Tarot village and...
Just like that.
It hit me.
I need a new deck.
And not just any old deck. I need one of the major alternatives to the Rider-Waite deck, something that releases me from the bonds of my Tarot education, that brings in new ideas and definitions, that makes me feel more than think.
Suddenly, a dream I once had where I was a rock in the ocean resurfaced in my mind. In the dream, I looked down at the rock, with the waves lapping against it, and said, "I just want to be here, in the water."
As many good - some great - readings I had had with my Rider-Waite decks, I always had that feeling that I was only really standing on the beach. I was not grounded in the water.
Well, we know when we are on the right track because everything seems to flow easily. Within minutes, I found the Thoth Tarot deck online, and well . . .
I fell in love.
It's now been about a month since we've been together, and well...excuse me if I'm a bit reserved when talking about the Thoth. We're still in the early stages, you know? We know we like each other and that we have great chemistry, but well, we're still getting to know each other. (Giggle, giggle)
Don't mind me, I'm just a Fool in Love!
When we call on the energy of a Tarot card, we are essentially praying for assistance in a very specific way. It's as if you say, "I need this kind of help." I need Hermit energy or I need Justice energy or I need to bring in Death energy. It's an effective way of focusing your mind on what you truly need to move forward. It's direct. It's specific.
So, when you find yourself at crossroads and are seeking some assistance, think of the Tarot or even Angel or Oracle cards. What energy in these cards would help you most? What card in the deck speaks to you deeply? Which card would you just LOVE to manifest?
Once you identify the card, hold it in your hands. Close your eyes, and say something like:
Dearest Heavenly Spirit,
Please help me manifest the energy of the ...... card in my life so that I may .... .
Much joy, light, and peace to you.
