I often tell folks that they are guided everyday not only by their highest guides, but also by loved ones who have passed. You know how it is. We hear a song on the radio or have a strange bit of synchronicity, and they come to mind. However, it may not always be clear if they’re wanting to talk with us or simply wanting to say "I love you."
There is a place within you though where you can have more direct interaction. All you need to do is pay close attention to your dreams.
Before I go too far, I should tell you that I often dream of loved ones who have passed, some recently, some long ago. It’s possible, actually it’s likely, that this is simply the brain’s way of conveying certain aspects of my personality that I share with them - I call these "shadow images." These images could also be my dream-brain trying to sort out aspects of this person's life on earth. Whatever the cause, I interact with these people in these dreams casually, as if they're still alive. Nothing about these dream-induced interactions is usually strange or particularly jarring.
So how do we know a dead relative is using the dream world to talk to us? First, there's a good bit of intuition involved. Something about the dreams have to hit you as a bit unusual, maybe even unsettling.
They are also likely to use a consistent symbol, word, or phrase to reach you. This is why keeping a dream journal really helps. Once you recognize the presence of this word or symbol across multiple dreams, you'll be able to see your loved one's role in them. From there you can deduce their message to you.
As you'll see next, the key for me was the presence of a specific name and animal in several dreams.
I understand this all sounds a bit squishy, so let me give you an example. For me, my late grandfather on my father’s side likes to use this method. His name was James, but many people called him Jimmie.
To be fair, I wasn’t automatically attuned to my grandfather’s use of the dreamworld to talk to me. In fact, I didn't realize he wanted to talk to me at all. It wasn't until he "appeared" during a reading with a medium that I understood he was interested in my life. You see, during the reading his spirit relayed some very poignant things to the medium, who then shared them with me. She didn’t know my family’s history, but what she said was too accurate, and so I knew my grandfather was standing right there.
A few nights later, I had a dream of a small dog. This dog was adorable, a little black and white furball. In this dream, he brought me a cell phone with a message for my father. The dog dropped the phone at my feet, and I knew to listen to the voicemail. The message turned out to have a warning for my father. (In real life my father would be diagnosed with a deadly disease a few months later.) Although I did not yet know my father's diagnosis, this dream had me thinking I had received an actual message from Spirit from this dog. I told my father about the dream, and life moved on.
However, I dreamt of this dog a second time a few weeks later. I was lucid enough in the dream to ask the dog, “What is your name?”. The dog responded “Gimwui.” In waking life, "Gimwui" meant absolutely nothing to me. Yet, you’ll recall how words and names often appear distorted in your dreams. Well, in time, I understood that this dog was probably my brain’s way of saying “Jimmie."
A few months later, I started having long and drawn-out dreams about my junior high school boyfriend, whose name was also Jimmie. Please understand that he was my "boyfriend" for all of 48 hours - not quite the life altering relationship I would typically be working out in my dream.
Yet, here I was dreaming about him, what he’s tried to do for me and how I longed to feel closer to him. They were very vivid dreams, slightly more dramatic than the norm.
When the fog of the dream had lifted a few days later, I realized this "Jimmie" shared a name with my grandfather and thus was probably my grandfather, not this old boyfriend, I was dealing with in the dream.
I'll admit that at this time, I still wasn't 100% sure. I mean, how did I know I wasn't just using my experience with the medium as a basis for dreams about him? That I wasn't just imagining what he may have wanted me to know?
Well, that's when my grandfather chucked the disguises and appeared in true form in my dream. Unlike dreams about other dead family members, nothing about this dream was casual or easy. Instead, it was terrifyingly real.
In the dream, I was walking alone in a dark parking garage. A voice said, “We think it’s time for you to engage…” and there before me was my grandfather, just as I remembered him. He slowly raised his head and looked directly at me. I was so startled that I woke myself up, scared out of my mind, his face burned into my memory.
This was a sign. Never in all of my dreams of past loved ones, had the energy been so intense that I had to wake up. This was different. It was like I looking a dead man in the face, and I just couldn’t handle it.
As scary as this dream was, it convinced me that bigger things were in charge of that dream. Here's where my intuition stepped in and said, "You know this wasn't just a dream." This was the real deal.
Soooo….suffice it to say my grandfather took the hint. Since then, he has gone back to using other people and objects to interact with me. (Thank you, Grandpy!) In a dream I had last week, he used a whiteboard to relay a message, signing it "Jimmie." The dream was about big life questions I was dealing with, and so his presence, as my most active and engaged ancestor, made sense. Even better, the message was something I really needed to hear at the time.
Friends, please take this as reason #5,062 that you should pay attention to your dreams! There's such an abundance of psychic power in there. There's also an infinite gray space where you and other energies can interact. It's so incredibly amazing - in fact, there aren't enough adjectives in the dictionary for me to describe just how mind-blowing your dreamworld is. And the coolest thing about it is that we each have one. You already possess it!
